And along with not feeling or draping as well as a half-canvas suit, all that glue in a fused jacket could go rogue if you dry cleaned them too much. Sure the jackets were fused, which means they were cheaper feeling and lacked the flexible canvas piece in pricier suits. Made from worsted wool with a slimmed down but not tight fit, it satisfied the needs of most purchasers. More than a few years ago, the sub $300 suit of choice around these parts was the J. Preemptive TL DR: Half canvas construction. What Spier and Mackay has done here is very, very economically impressive. For a wedding, for a job interview, for whatever. That said, these are the best suits you’re going to find for under $300. And we’re all working with a different budget, under different conditions, with different priorities. Despite us all living in a hot-take society, and #menswear internet “culture” being a best/worst world, there’s too much nuance. We don’t do a lot of hyperbole or ultra-declarative statements.

Those are a handful times where I've been met in a way I couldn't even ask for.Spier and Mackay Red Label Half Canvas Suits – $298Įditor’s Note: If you’re shopping for your very first suit, or it’s just been awhile since you bought one… you might want to check out our How to Buy your First Suit guide.

And the package with UPS? Well, if it's found and delivered I can gladly keep it apparently. The items in the order are currently out of stock so Spier offered me to place MTO orders but only charge RTW prices if I want to for the same items. I reached out to Spier, they immediately suggested that they refund me the whole order without/before even opening a case with UPS. UPS, I assume lost my recent order since the package haven't been scanned in 15 days.

Everything for free and they offered me an additional store credit for the inconvenience. They asked me to send the jackets back from Europe to Canada at their expense, fixed the jackets and sent them back to me.

Two of my MTM jackets had a minor sewing issue where the front and back panel weren't laid straight to each other when they were sewn together. I chose the latter and they refunded me the cost. They immediately asked me to send it back or send it to a tailor. 8 months after reception, I noticed that the lining in the sleeve was ripped. I purchased a RTW suit but didn't bother to check it upon reception. They refunded the last item (trousers) I purchased, let me keep it AND offered to make me a whole new suit for the same price as the trousers in another equal fabric since the initial fabric I ordered was out of stock. However, I felt the difference was too significant upon reception. I was aware of the risk and Spier warned me of the risk before I placed the order. Again, I'd be happy if they offered to refund the re-hemming cost.Īnother time I had a MTM suit made where I had the trousers and jacket made different seasons. On another occasion, I had the same issue but with a MTM suit. I'd be satisfied if they offered to re-hem. Spier refunded me the whole cost of the trousers and let me keep them.

I just had them re-hemmed as there was sufficient fabric inside. On one occasion I had a pair of trousers hemmed 0,5" to short. Everytime I reached out to them, they've offered solutions I myself wouldn't even suggest. That's never a good sign for any company really.īut in spite of that, I wanted to shime in with my experience, which have been great everytime. I'm really sorry that some people have had bad experiences with customer service. I am keeping the lightweight Aquascutum and donating the heavier Burberry, which will be replaced by the SM But the heft of the S&M has me reversing the plan. I had planned to use this SM trench to replace my fairly lightweight but older Aquascutum and keep my old, heavy weight Burberry for the really cold temps. Both my old Aquascutum and Burberry trenches are a couple inches longer. The trench hem sits at the bottom of my knee, which is adequate and longer than most trenches being sold to men today, but I think it needs two more inches in length to really be classic length. Things that would make the SM trench even better: remove the flaps over the hand warmer pockets, as others have suggested (they get in the way if you want to use the pockets) and, add a couple of inches in length, or offer "L" sizes for guys like me. As delivered, with quilted liner buttoned in, this trench should handle pretty cold temps and will fit nicely over all of my tailoring. I did not size up, and would not suggest doing so. Things I like about it: the gabardine exterior is hefty, every bit as hefty as my old Burberry the cotton tartan lining the extra quilted button-in liner and the ample shoulder and chest room to allow the trench to layer over a winter weight SC.
